TOBA TEK SINGH: Faisalabad Regional Police Officer (RPO) Inamur Rehman Malik has dismissed Sub-Inspector Hakim Ali, the former station house officer (SHO) of the City Toba Tek Singh police station, from service for gross misconduct after he was found to have illegally detained an innocent rickshaw driver for seven days.
According to a police press release, an inquiry conducted by a superintendent of police found the officer guilty of misconduct, and he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for his actions. A review of his service record also revealed a poor disciplinary history, as he had reportedly faced suspension and dismissal on multiple occasions in the past.
Hakim Ali was summoned before the RPO, where departmental proceedings were considered. Based on the inquiry findings and his unsatisfactory service record, the RPO ordered his dismissal from service on Monday.
The dismissal follows the officer’s suspension earlier this month, when the RPO paid a surprise visit to the City Toba Tek Singh police station and found a citizen held in the lockup without any case registered against him. The RPO ordered the man’s immediate release, handed him over to his family members and suspended the SHO, saying that police officials who harass citizens have no place in the police department. During the visit, he also inspected the station’s front desk, record room, muharrar office and malkhana, as well as its cleanliness.
Senior police officials in the Faisalabad region have repeatedly said that illegal detention and harassment of citizens will not be tolerated, and that surprise inspections of police stations and lockups are meant to ensure that no one is held without legal authority. Illegal custody remains among the most common public complaints against the police in Punjab.
