North Korea has fired a ballistic missile towards the sea, South Korea’s military said, in Pyongyang’s latest weapons launch amid continuing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
The launch was detected by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, which said it was analysing the missile’s type, range and flight path in coordination with the United States and Japan. No damage was reported.
North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests in recent years as it expands its weapons programme, which includes nuclear-capable ballistic missiles of varying ranges. The launches routinely draw condemnation from Seoul, Washington and Tokyo, and are banned under United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Regional governments said they were monitoring the situation closely.
