ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a relief package of Rs 12.5 million for the families of Pakistani seamen who were killed in a hijacking incident off the coast of Somalia.
The announcement was made as the government moved to support the bereaved families of the sailors, whose deaths in the pirate attack drew grief and condemnation. Officials said the compensation was a recognition of the families’ loss and of the risks Pakistani merchant seamen face while working on international shipping routes.
The waters off Somalia have long been associated with piracy, and Pakistani sailors form a significant part of the crews serving on vessels that pass through the region. The government said relevant departments were in contact with the affected families to complete the process of assistance.
Further details about the incident and the repatriation of the victims were being coordinated through the foreign ministry, officials added.
